Prepare before you go

If you're fleeing the war, there's a lot to consider. Here are a few suggestions based on conversations we've had:

  • If you know someone in another country that you trust, consider going there as they can help get you acclimated.
  • If you don't have a place to go, prioritize getting to safety first, and then figure out your path forward. Refugee centers in western Ukraine and bordering countries are a safe place for you and your family to get shelter, food, and medical support. Once you get there, you can rest and use their Wi-Fi to research what destination is best for your situation, and their registered staff and volunteers will help you along the way.
  • Here are some helpful sources of information about your rights and services offered, by country.

  2. Never give anyone your Passport or documents. If someone is helping you register, hold your Passport.
  3. Memorize your Passport number.
  4. Never give anyone your phone.
  5. Make travel arrangements ahead of time when possible and agree on fees early.
  6. Ask the person you intend to travel or stay with to share the exact address and phone number of where you're going.
  7. Ask the person you intend to travel with to show their documents.

Seek psychological safety from trauma

  1. Focus on your basic needs first. Focus on one need at a time. Secure shelter, food, and healthcare first.
  2. Connect with other displaced people. Creating a network of individuals in community centers, religious settings, and social gatherings promotes information sharing and reduces isolation.
  3. Breathe. Practice basic mindfulness exercises like breathing while slowly exhaling can lower stress, help you sleep, and promote general wellbeing.
  4. Talk to a health worker or volunteer if you're having flashbacks, recurrent nightmares, an inability to relax, or a depressed or irritable mood.
  5. Seek work or involvement in your new community. Returning to work reduces stress by lowering financial burden and worry for the whole family.
